Childhood Obesity Prevention Explained!

Childhood obesity rates are soaring. Recently Australia was even ahead of the US! Just today, I was reading information that I might outlive my 3 year old daughter! Now at 57, I am not too sure about that, but research suggests that the state of health of kids is such that many of us will experience the most dreaded event a parent can face – the funeral of one of their children. Here is a research report which explains the situation.
“Children born in the year 2000 or later are not expected to outlive their parents” stated Dr. David Katz of the Yale Preventive Medicine Research Center in New Haven, Connecticut at a nutrition conference April 2006. In March of 2005, Dr. Katz quoted in a Wall Street Journal article that a ‘poor diet in kids is more dangerous than alcohol, drugs, and tobacco combined!”
I bet many of you are aware of this! In Australia childhood Diabetes and Asthma are around 20%, a pretty alarming rate. Childhood diabetes obesity is a result of this. Japan is catching up rapidly as they embrace the western way of life. So what causes obesity and what can we do about it?
For me, it is a chicken and egg situation. We are told to give our kids 5-7 servings of fruits and veggies every day while being bombarded with junk food ads on commercial TV. A couple of years ago tony Abbott, then Australian Health Minister was confronted on this. His opinion – it is the parents who need to stop their kids watching ads! It is no wonder there are so many obese children in our society. Don’t expect the government to fix this up. They are tied up with the “healthcare” and “food” industries, both of which profit hugely from this situation. Yes, I am afraid it is up to us to save our kids!!
What Can We Do?
First, you may be able to change the government, but that is a huge disempowering task that is beyond the individual. Change is happening, but by the time enough is done by governments, it will be too late for your kids. No one wants to face the situation of obesity surgery for their children. I think on a microcosm scale, what can I do for my daughter and my family right now?
What is within my power to change?
We visit the gym regularly, I play Tennis and Skye, our 3 year old is now in the “Superkids” program. So exercise is one important step. As much as possible our daughter is kept away from commercial TV and those junk food ads. We realize this will be more difficult as she gets older, but for now she rarely eats sweets and is very healthy. She is not goig to be one of those obesity statistics.
But Wait, there’s more?
Wouldn’t it be great if eating right and exercising would solve all the problems. There are other factors at play. Nutrition is lacking in our food, even organic. A study in Britain concluded that organic food didn’t have significantly more vitamins and minerals than normal food. We are victims of overcultivation. The same crops are grown year after year in the same patch of dirt. Then there are toxins. Vegans rest easy! Commercial crops are sprayed and dusted, and the ground contains heavy metals which make their way through the food chain and into your kids! As these increase, and they will, obesity rates will rise further. I know, this is not much fun, but it is the truth!
When Diet and Exercise Aren’t Enough.
Yes, I have decided that removing the toxins, particularly Heavy Metals, and boosting nutritional levels and the immune system are sound choices for reducing child obesity and promoting future wellness. We all have our personal choices as to what supplements we take. I am very happy with my choice. Scientifically backed and certainly the best I have sampled. Nutrition is complicated and we need many micronutrients. Without taking some supplements, it is very difficult to get everything you need to thrive. Same with your kids.
Let’s adopt these strategies and in the face of what is happening out there see our brilliant, well adjusted, disease free kids thrive well into the 21st Century and outlive us by many years, even if we reach 100! Left unchecked we are sure to read more stories about obesity in children.

here in Philippines, obesity is also becoming a problem. More and more children are getting obese due to a lifestyle that is not fully of physical activities. most kids just wants to watch TV, play computer games and surf the net.

I love that you included what is within one’s power to change. Health is always within your own power to change or to improve, even if it’s just a little bit at a time. There’s a quote I always live by, “Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” You’ll waste your time stressing about all the things you cannot change about your health, so you should simply focus on the things you can. As you suggested, proper exercise and diet can do wonders if you’re consistent and determined to make that change.
